Five Tips For Styling A Kids’ Room

Regardless of whether you share your home with children or about to be, learning how to design a kid’s room does vary when compared to a grown up’s bedroom.

It’s no secret that small minds require nurturing if they are to develop their best possible potential, and what you contribute as a parent can make all the difference – even when it comes to a child’s bedroom.

Although considered to be one of the most rewarding journeys we can choose from life, sharing your home with a child can be a rollercoaster of emotions, noises and messes. As a parent, it’s your job to ultimately ensure that your child has a safe place to learn and absorb the world under your care, and a kids’ room is ground zero with where these experiences all start.

While many parents envision a floaty kids’ room filled with soft furnishings and rattan, it’s not long until their child’s recent discovery of dinosaurs threatens to derail the entire design of their kids’ room – so how do you get it right?

How To Design The Perfect Kids’ Room

While a child’s bedroom is often their sanctuary, designing a kids’ room is a whole different ball game when compared to styling the same room for an adult. Little hands are curious tools that can get into all sorts of places that they shouldn’t, so safety should always be at the forefront of all decor and design plans.

While the perfect kids’ room will depend on the age of the child that resides in it, the good news is that there are always a few key fundamentals to consider when bringing this type of space to life.

Embrace Minimalism – When it comes to styling the ideal kids’ room, less is more. A child’s bedroom shouldn’t be packed to the brim with toys, furniture or accessories, as it’s important to leave room for them to use the space as a blank canvas of their own to play. This also makes it easier to tweak the space as your child grows.

Pick Your Palette – Colour palettes for kids’ rooms should be able to stand the test of time. Regardless of whether it’s Peter Pan or Peppa Pig, avoid the temptation to lean into your child’s flavour of the month as this will leave you out of pocket and deflated when they eventually move onto the next thing. Instead, aim for a theme that reflects their personality and won’t date.

Smart Storage – Let’s be honest, children are messy little creatures, and this needs to be factored in when designing a kids’ room. From their toys, games, and books to their ever-changing wardrobes in multiple sizes, kids come with a lot of stuff, so invest in built-in wardrobes, baskets and even hooks on the walls to encourage less clutter.

Play With Texture – Did you know that too many bold colours can actually overstimulate the mind of a child? While this can be great during the day, it’s not so fun when you’re trying to get them to wind down. If you’re lacking inspiration with your decor or furnishings, consider experimenting with texture as a means to add flair for both the room and your child.

Zone The Space – The beauty about a child’s bedroom is that it usually means the inclusions are smaller, and thus has more room to work with. Try and designate “zones” for sleeping, relaxing, studying and playing. Additions such as a corner teepee are great for managing big emotions, as well as a small desk for colouring or homework when the time comes.

When styling a kids room, be sure to remember that this is not a space about you. Show restraint when it comes to going over the top with your own preferences, and instead try to include items that you know are true to your child’s personality and overall vibe.

While perfecting the look and feel of a kids’ room is a relatively easy renovation to tackle, not all home upgrades are as straightforward. Kitchen, bathroom and flooring facelifts require significant amounts of homework and research if you want your final product to match your vision, so having a chat to the professionals before you start shopping is always a good idea – but where do you find them?
