Steps in Properly Installing Loose Lay Vinyl Plank Flooring
Step 1: Removing The Old Flooring
You will need to create a blank canvas before being able to install your vinyl plank flooring. So, get ready to get dirty and rip up all that old flooring, and if you are removing old carpet, remember to also remove the “smooth edge” (wooden rim that the carpet is attached to underneath).
Depending on the size of the area you are renovating, and what flooring you are removing, this could become quite a large job, so asking for help from a friend or neighbour will help speed up this process.
Don’t let this first step put you off – the rest of the process is pretty easy, and the results will be worth it, we promise!
Step 2: Levelling The Area
You will need to ensure that the area to be laid with your new vinyl planks is completely flat with no lumps or divots. This can be achieved with what is called a ‘skim coat’. Essentially, it is a levelling compound that looks similar to cement slurry.
It is easy to apply, and dries quickly – about an hour. So you can take a little break, or move to the next room to start the process there.
Step 3: Laying The Vinyl Planks
Finally, once your skim coat has cured, it is time to lay your new vinyl plank flooring. This product is what we like to call a true do-it-yourself system as it is much simpler to install than older vinyl flooring technologies.
Decide which way you wish the planks to run in your space and set out the room as per manufacturers guide lines. Apply Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) to the floor with a paint roller . Simply lay the planks top to tail in your desired direction, making sure that you leave no gaps between each of the planks. Once you have completed the entire space the floor is now ready to use. Yep, that’s it.
