How to create a cohesive canvas for your home with flooring options that flow throughout the house.
Home layout trends have changed over time and reflect how we use our homes – we have gone from having long hallways with doors to separate rooms designed for different functions to the new modern home design of knocking down walls and embracing open-plan living. Nowadays we also see ‘broken-plan’ layouts, which use half-walls, glass walls, and shelving units to slightly separate spaces to increase privacy while keeping the functionality, light flow and sense of space we love from open plans.
Choosing The Right Flooring Material
The challenge we now face with open or ‘broken’ floor plans is to select flooring that works with the flow – we can’t simply have tiles in the kitchen, carpet in the living room and timber flooring in the dining room. Because we don’t have a structural separation of space, it’s quite tricky to select different flooring materials that will work seamlessly together. Our go-to suggestion here is to stick with one flooring option throughout the open living space, and the best options that work for living, dining and kitchen areas are tiles and timber-look options like loose lay vinyl planks, as these are waterproof and come in very luxurious options.
Tile Choices
Some of our favourite tiles that flow seamlessly through your home are the Macchiato, Novastone, Stari ranges which come in 4 x colours and 3 x finishes Lappato (Semi-Gloss), Matt, Grip. You can use them in the Matt finish on bathroom floors with a Lappato finish on the walls. Through the main living areas, we suggest the Lappato finish, and of course, using the Grip finish outside on the alfresco area.
Not only does this create a beautiful flow that won’t distract from your later interior design options, it also helps you bring the outdoors in.
Loose Lay Vinyl Flooring
Loose lay vinyl flooring has a wide range of benefits, apart from giving your open living space the look of wooden flooring, you also get a product that is incredibly easy to install, maintain, and is very durable.
To help you ‘separate’ the spaces within an open floor plan, you can strategically place rugs and furniture pieces to keep different functionalities of the room to specific areas, and that will allow your family to be alone together.
For the rest of your home, where you need walls and doors, including bathrooms, bedrooms, home offices and media rooms, we think you can use different flooring options depending on the practicality of the room and your personal preferences.
Carpet flooring is perfect for bedrooms and media rooms, timber look floors are a fantastic choice for studies and home offices, and the obvious flooring option for bathrooms is tiles.
