One of our most regular queries is whether it is a good idea to install tile over tile! We wanted to give our old blog a refresh and go into further detail about the pros and cons of installing tile over tile.
When planning a room refresh, re-tiling is often at the top of the list! Tiling over tile is a fast, easy way to go, however, there are things consider before jumping in. To help you decide, here are some pros and cons of tiling over tile.
Cost
Tiling over existing tile is usually a much easier and cheaper solution than pulling up your original tiles and re-tiling your floor. When tiling over tile, you don’t have to worry about the cost of hiring people to remove your tiles, or if doing it yourself, you don’t need to worry about the cost of renting heavy stripping machines needed to remove the tiles.
Time
Another advantage of tiling over tile is saving time. You do not have to allot work-hours to pull up the existing tiles which means the tiling work can be finished much faster – and all without the big mess!
Floor Height
When tiling over tile, you must consider floor height. Tiling over tile means that your new floor will be higher than the original. Make sure you measure up your space to ensure your new floor wont block doors or cupboards that are in line with the old flooring prior to the re-tiling job. Tiled over floors may also result in a large step up from the outside room into your bathroom, which could be an accident hazard.
Adherence
To tile over tile, you will need to consider priming the surface to ensure proper adherence of your new tiles.
To ensure your new floor will adhere properly over the original tiles, Check that the existing tiles are adhered to the surface and the floor is not drummy or sounds hollow underneath. A suitable surface primer will be required. It is recommended that a high-grade non porous primer such as Optimus Primer is used to ensure maximum opportunity for your Novatex adhesive to work its magic. Optimus Primer is an easier alternative to grinding the surface of the tile back.
Once your area has been primed with Optimus primer the best universal adhesive to use would be our Novatex Uni Nova.
