Our top DIY tips to keep your remodel cheap
So, you’ve decided to bite the bullet and remodel your bathroom but you don’t have $20 000 to demolish the space and start with a blank canvas. Perhaps you’ve considered a DIY remodel, but you’re not particularly handy. Well, we’ve compiled a list of simple DIY methods that even the least handy person can handle, which will save you money on your bathroom renovation and allow you to create a space that you love.
Refinish Your Furnishings
Instead of replacing the items in your bathroom why not trying refinishing them? A vanity can be dressed up and refreshed by sanding it and adding a new coat of paint. Instead of replacing your bathroom mirror, try adding some decorative moulding around the outside or perhaps a frame. All the furnishings in your space can be refinished, you can even buy paint which is specially designed for refinishing bathtubs, showers and tiles. You can paint them white for a fresh new feel, or if you prefer, you can add a coat of coloured paint over the top for a complete transformation. Refinishing your existing furnishings instead of replacing them will save you a lot of money while still giving your bathroom a renovated feel.
Go on a ‘second-hand’ shopping trip
An alternative to refinishing your existing bathroom items is to purchase second-hand bathroom items. This will save you lots of money and is especially great if you are designing a bathroom with a vintage or retro feel. EBay, Etsy and Gumtree have lots of used bathroom furnishings that you can use to turn your bathroom into a fabulous new space.
Keep it simple
We also recommend you to be smart about your tiles when renovating. Simple tiles are far cheaper then elaborate tiles and it’s more likely you won’t get sick of your new tiles if you keep them simple and classic. Elaborately printed tiles will become dated far more quickly than simple tiles. If you have your heart set on printed or special tiles, perhaps use them as a feature strip down the wall, or across the floor. This will help keep your budget down, and the printed tiles will be more subtle.
Stick with your current plumbing layout
Don’t move your plumbing fixtures around. If you can keep your toilet, shower, bathtub and vanity where they already are, you will save yourself a fortune on plumbers’ fees and demolition costs.
These tricks will help you keep your budget down and still allow you to create your dream bathroom.
