Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) Rating Guide for Ceramic Tiles

Therefore, it is vital to ensure you have the right tile for your selected area. Understanding ratings for each tile will help in choosing the tile that is best for you.
The Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) provides a rating guide that outlines the strength of glaze that is applied to the tile against scratching and wearing. This rating is applied to both wall and floor tiles.
PEI 0: No Traffic
Tiles that are placed into this rating should be used as wall tiles in residential or commercial applications. These tiles are not recommended for anywhere with foot traffic.
PEI 1: LIGHT TRAFFIC
These tiles are suitable for areas with very low bare or stocking foot traffic. Residential areas are most suited for this tile, perhaps in a bathroom or as a wall tile.
PEI 2: Light to Medium Traffic
Suitable for areas protected from abrasive and scratching agents and away from heavy traffic areas.
PEI 3: Medium to Heavy Traffic
Tiles with this rating can be used in all residential applications and in light and medium traffic commercial properties. Suitable for all domestic areas.
PEI 4: Medium to Heavy Traffic
Suitable for all domestic and some commercial use.
PEI 5: Heavy Traffic
These tiles are suitable for any residential area and heavy commercial areas such as airports, shopping malls and supermarkets. They are useful where maximum durability is required.
