Different Tile Styles, Colours, and Finishes
Sometimes, when deciding on which tile to use, things can seem a little overwhelming. With so many finishes, colours, and styles – your options are endless. We’ve put together a quick guide to help you navigate through your tiling options.
Monocottura Tiles
Monocottura ceramic tiles are a strong and water-resistant tiling option. Going through a single fire process, the tiles are baked at a higher temperature, creating a durable product with a hard glaze. The bond between this glaze and the clay biscuit make it more resistant to peeling and cracking. Monocottura’s durability makes it a perfect option for flooring in both indoor and outdoor areas.
Glazed Porcelain Tiles
Glazed porcelain tiles are a durable option that comes in a range of colours, finishes and designs. As well as being relatively easy to clean, glazed porcelain tiles are extremely stain and water resistant. While perfect for bathrooms and kitchens, they can have a slippery finish compared to other porcelain tiles which makes them unsuitable for flooring in uncovered outdoor areas.
Unglazed Porcelain Tiles
Unglazed porcelain tiles are perfect for creating a natural earthly design in your home. Their rough texture makes them slip resistant and perfect for outdoor areas. They do require a little more maintenance and, in order to make them stain and water resistant, a clear sealant may be applied depending on the tile. While a variety of colours and styles are available, these are limited compared to the selections of glazed tiles.
Polished Porcelain Tiles
Polished porcelain tiles have all the durable benefits of normal porcelain tiles with the added elegance of a polished finish. This finish allows the tiles to reflect light, brightening any room and creating the optical illusion of a bigger area. Polished porcelain is a popular flooring option that can be used throughout your home, especially in the kitchen or living areas. They also look fantastic in bathrooms giving these spaces that hotel bathroom feels.
Rectified Tiles
Rectified tiles have been cut after manufacturing to ensure perfect straight edges and dimensional symmetry. These tiles may be a little harder to lay as the finished tiled surface needs to be smooth and flat with a minimal grout joint and if a matching coloured grout is used, the finished project will have a seamless appeal, producing a beautifully clean and uniformed finish.
Mosaic Tiles
Mosaic tiles are perfect for those who want to get a bit creative and produce a visual impact. Small and generally square, mosaic tiles are laid closely together to create one larger effect which can truly transform a room. From simple to complicated patterns, you can create a beautiful masterpiece in your bathroom, entryway or splash back. Mosaic tiles come in glass, ceramic or porcelain forms and usually come in a 300mm x 300mm sheet which can be cut down to create different widths if you choose to create vertical feature strips in your bathroom.
