Vinyl Plank Flooring: A Great Budget-Friendly Alternative to Timber Flooring
Vinyl plank flooring is a popular choice to fill houses, and for good reason. Vinyl Plank is designed to mimic the distinctive and elegant appearance of hardwood floors at a fraction of the cost, settling neatly with the décor of any room. It comes in many colours and patterns, is easy to take care of, and looks good for years to come.
What is Vinyl Plank?
Vinyl plank, often called luxury vinyl, is the newest form of vinyl flooring on the market. Unlike traditional (or ‘sheet’) vinyl, the plank involves many smaller pieces that are connected. Not only do the segments look better, but they also don’t need a professional to install.
The planks are about 5mm thick, making them one of the thinnest flooring options. Vinyl is an entirely synthetic material, and planks are made from a multilayer PVC vinyl before being printed over and covered with walkable layers.
Resistance
A vinyl floor can survive decent foot-traffic for at least twenty years. While a busy company might need a slightly more frequent update, the average household can go decades without worrying about their floor. All vinyl planks need is to be swept regularly and mopped occasionally.
The level of water-resistance varies between makes. All vinyl planks stand up to moisture better than laminate or hardwood, but only some are specifically water-proof. If you are flooring a wet area, such as a bathroom or laundry, make sure you speak with your supplier to ensure that the product is suitable.
Installation and Removal
Installation is easy for any vinyl plank fan who doesn’t mind a bit of DIY. Assuming your subfloor is in good condition, the planks can be laid direction on top. Simply place the planks beside each other and make sure that you use a pressure sensitive adhesive and you’re ready to go (for more details, see our step-by-step guide to laying vinyl flooring planks).
One of the advantages of individual planks is that pieces can be pulled apart separately. If one of the planks has been scuffed or discoloured, you can easily replace it without tearing apart the room.
